Are Dental Discount Cards Worth it Or is Insurance Better?

  • 288

Having a dental discount card can save you money when you visit a participating dentist. Most dental discount cards are issued by discount dental plan networks. You join the plan, they issue you a card and then you’re free to visit any dentist within the network.

Unlike dental insurance, discount plans do not provide coverage for anything. These cards simply provide you a discount so you can get premium dental care at a much reduced rate.

The biggest advantage of going with a discount plan over an insurance policy is that you can be seen immediately for any existing problem that you may have, where insurance will NOT pay for an pre-existing conditions until you’ve owned the policy for up to a full year.

Here’s an example. Let’s say that you or one of your kids were riding a bike, got into an accident and broke two of your teeth. If you already owned an insurance policy before this happened then this would be covered. Of course, you’d have to pay the deductible, if you had one. However, if you did not already own dental insurance before the accident occurred then buying a policy with the intention of getting the broken teeth fixed would be a waste of time.

Let’s look at this example and maybe it will help you to understand how insurance companies have to work in order to profit. Let’s say that you just bought a car from a private party through an ad in your local newspaper. You’ll need insurance immediately in order for it to be legal to drive on the road. The first thing you do is pay a visit to your insurance agent. The agent will then come outside with a clipboard and a camera and take pictures and notes of any existing damage that has already been done to the vehicle. Why? Because they don’t want to get stuck paying for anything that was already there!

Dental insurance works the same way. The dentist will take x-rays of your entire mouth, make a record of what they find and then they’ll be able to tell you what needs to be done, as well as what your policy will and won’t cover. Anything that’s already there will have to be paid for out of your own pocket.

Discount plans are exactly what they sound like, a “discount” plan. This means that by using the card you won’t have to pay full price. Pre-existing conditions are not a problem. All ages are accepted and there’s very little paperwork to deal with.

The only drawback of using a dental discount card is that you’ll need to pay the balance of your care at the time of your visit. There is no financing discounted fees. An example might be something like this. You need new dentures. The average cost of getting an upper denture is in the range of $1400.00, however the plan offers a 50% discount. This means that you could get your denture for just $700.00. However, you must pay that money in full at the time of your visit. Does that make sense?
